Hoodlums Galore

"Why" is a word that, for the large part, doesn't seem to do justice to the level of sheer confusion that I feel about a lot of things in the world. but one of them in particular. Why do some people, the likes of which are standing outside the place where I work, insist on making other people's lives a misery? I would understand if they held some sort of a personal grudge or something but as far as I know I haven't tried to offend these people. Specifically, of course, I'm talking about the "Yob" culture which is so inevitable in British society today. Now the place where I work, the people I work for, etc is all to do with charity. I work for a charity. In a small town. For this small town with this charity-run hall for their use. So why (there it is, the hugely inadequate word again) do these people I'm trying to help by DOING MY JOB decide they want to taunt me, intimidate me and generally make sure that I'm scared shitless of coming to work? I can't work it out. I have tried ignoring them, I have tried reasoning with them and still they insist on continuing down this oppressive path. And no, I don't consider myself to be "whiney" or "moaning", I consider these people to be the second biggest problem in modern society within developed countries (I'm sure you know I'm probably not the only one who feels this way about yobs).
Any thoughts would be appreciated....

What is a "Yob"? Thanks Carol

A "yob" is anyone under the age of 35 who you see staggering about on any given Friday, shouting "OOOYYYYYY BBUUUUDDDYYY!!" at the top of their voices.

Thanks-when I first moved down south to Augusta GA in 1964 James Brown's song "Pappa's got a brand new bag" was popular, and it took me 20 years to find out what that meant! Do you have Yuppies and Buppies over there?Carol

I know what a yuppie is, but what's a buppie?
  • scottishlassie said 9 months ago
A buppie is a black yuppie (nothing derogatory in that whatsoever), and I didn't make it up anyway. Thanks for explaining what a Yob is. Carol[THUMBUP]

oh well in that case i have never seen a buppie (here), you'd be surprised at the lack of black people where I live. (I don't live in a racist society or anything, it's just black people make up a VERY small minority where I live) [THUMBUP]

I want to hear about where you live. Whenever you feel like it, tell me anything you can. Carol

I live in Carmarthenshire, Wales. There really isn't much to say about it, other than how tremendously boring it is. Out in the country, 5 miles between each house, that kind of thing...
Actually, the reason it's so boring to me is probably just because i'm into technology so much[SMILE]

I could feel that you were very intelligent, and underchallenged in your present circumstances, so you were feeling sort of like a boiling pot. Where I live in Augusta GA, it is growing so fast, it's like an atom bomb. I come originally from New York City, and so I have a good sense of what it's like to live in a giant place, medium place, or small place. When I moved to Augusta, it was still small. We have a giant medical complex here, boths hospitals and schools, we have a military Base here, Fort Gordon, GA & Eisenhower Army Medical Center. It's 7 miles from Augusta. We have over 700 churches of all denominations here. I'm not sure if that is unusual or not. We are three hours from Atlanta, GA (big place), Charleston SC (beautiful seacoast place) Savannah GA (lovely old southern city) one hour from Columbia SC (capital of SC), and 3 hours from the north Georgia mountains where there is a lot of resort type stuff going on. Augusta has the Medical College of GA, (meds students and dental students), Eisenhower Army Medical School teaches residents) VA Hospital (two of them), countless long term care facilities, with and without extra medical intervention, two nuclear plants within 45 minutes of Augusta (Vogtle and Barnwell SC), so no matter what you are into (rural, medicine, engineering, education, dentistry, clergy,w hatever) you can find something of interest here. I like the Savannah River. Augusta is situated right on the Savannah River, and there is still much that has not been ruined by man. What is in Wales that you can earn a living doing? Presumably, with computers, you are in no way limited if you like to work on computers (I don't mean repair) I mean anything else. The world is heading for some very bad times to come in the soon (2009+)years, and maybe you are safer, much safer, in a rural area where you could sustain life without the city. Just a thought. why that specific point in time?[HUH]

btw, your "boiling pot" remark is closer to the truth than you might think, but not in the context you put it in. I don't feel like I'm In a boiling pot, more like I AM the boiling pot and my mind's just about ready to explode with the level of sheer frustration I hold within[MAD]

No- you picked up just the way I meant it. I see you doing big things in life, but I do not know know your $ circumstances, so I don't know how you can accomplish the things, but I do know you are more than ready to begin. Carol
